The Ultimate Laptop-Buying Guide
  • PublishedSeptember 28, 2022

In the market for a new laptop? There are several essential things to consider. Whether it’s a Windows, Mac, or Linux model, it’s important to know what to look for when buying a laptop. This is not just about the operating system. What screen resolution is best for the intended usage? Are there enough ports for all the peripherals? These are things to consider when buying a new laptop.

This buying guide will help one decide on the best laptop for their needs:

The OS

The first thing to look at is the hardware when deciding which operating system to choose. While Apple’s MacOS and Microsoft’s Windows have traditionally been the two most popular choices, Google’s Chrome OS is a popular alternative offered on much more affordable laptops.

Primary Usage

It is crucial to determine the primary use for the laptop & then look for laptops in that category. One can find great laptops for $500 or less that are perfect for introductory purposes and saving money. Or one might want to look at laptops in the range of $1000 to $1500, as well. These offer better hardware than low-end models but don’t come with premium features, high-powered graphics chips, or fancy materials.

Processor

The CPU is the computer’s brain and handles most of the general work. It executes any task that requires accessing or changing data. Better CPUs can process more data at quicker speeds, but remember that a CPU’s pure clock speed doesn’t necessarily paint the whole picture.

Audio Quality

Although some laptops come with decent speakers, most don’t have room for good-quality speakers in their casings. Most laptops provide a headphone jack or external audio output, so the user can connect headphones or external speakers if they want a more immersive listening experience.

Memory

RAM, which stands for “random access memory,” is a type of computer storage that allows temporary data to be accessed quickly. Essentially, the higher the RAM, the more information the computer can process at any given time, enabling the user to do more things simultaneously. So, look for a laptop with a high RAM.
